It can take a few weeks to get things right - and even then things can change again - your body will probably still be producing insulin so things can change a lot in the beginning. You have joined a great place and if you need any help we are all here for you.Bev
Hi Bev, thank you. Since leaving hospital last week after levels and keytones went a bit mad, I still don't really understand why there was such a panic over the keytones but they gave me enough IV fluids to sink a ship. Hopefully I'll see the nurse again this week and sort out the units I need to take. The nuse did say that eventually I would learn to adjust the units depending on what I was doing. Though very early days yet, I'm looking forward to controlling my diabetes, just a bit hesitant about retuning to work and having to inject during the day. Appreciate your time.
They panic when your ketones go mad because too high a concentration of ketones makes your blood potentially more acidic than it should be ('ketoacidosis'); it makes you feel lousy and can - in extremis - induce weakness and coma and death and things, so best to dilute them with some iv fluids before it gets to that point.
Good luck with going back to work, when YOU are feeling ready.... Hopefully injecting will become second nature to you before you know it....
Its a difficult time dealing with a new onset of diabetes, hope everythign is going ok, you sound as if it is so far. Just ask if there is anythign we can help you with.
